The nutrition cascade — a dynamic pathway model.

A working model of how a food-system shock fans across many pathways at once, sorts by nutrient class down to specific proteins, folds back through reinforcing loops, and arrives as two terminal risks. Toggle the shocks and interventions; step the four volatility windows; and trace ten named, evidenced risk cascades through the network.

A shock is not one harm. It is a set of pathways, firing together, at different speeds, amplified by loops — and this model lets you trace each one.

This is the detailed build of the mechanism behind the worked Camden Nutrition Risk Model, in the grammar of The Cascade Atlas. Four things make it specific:

  • A granular network. Protein is split into its real sub-chains — eggs & poultry, farmed fish, red meat & dairy — each dropping at a different rate; the social terminal opens into the seven negative social-tipping thresholds; the financial terminal into its three sub-channels (sticky inflation, fiscal ratchet, unpriced under-hedge).
  • A time dimension. Step the four volatility windows (winter access → pre-harvest import dependency → input-price reset → compound tail) to see which pathways are live in each.
  • Real 2026 figures. Click any node for its mechanism, the specific figure and its source, and the lag at which it transmits.
  • A cascade library. Ten named, evidenced risk cascades — select one and it lights its exact path through the network and opens a staged dossier: each stage with its time-lag, its topology (chokepoint / loop / ratchet…), the early-warning signal, the evidence, and the intervention that cuts it.

It is a qualitative model, not a forecast. Node intensity and the two gauges are relative pressure (0–100), driven by a bounded any-of propagation with illustrative weights; they render structure, not probabilities.

Price → hoarding → price

A price spike triggers export bans and hoarding (visible in 2026), thinning the traded market and raising the next spike. Food-price shocks are partly self-amplifying.

Cheap-calorie substitution and protein drop raise diet-disease and undernutrition, raising the health bill and leaving less room to protect affordability.

Provision strain erodes trust and governability, degrading the capacity to respond — the loop that carries the system toward Terminal A.

  • Qualitative, not quantitative. Weights are illustrative; gauges are relative pressure (0–100), not probabilities or dated forecasts.
  • The granularity is a curated reduction. Real cascades have more nodes and cross-links; the sub-chains and the seven thresholds are the load-bearing ones, not a census.
  • Window and lag tags are illustrative. They convey ordering and speed, not calibrated timing.
  • Inherits the source caveats. The 2026 figures are a mid-July snapshot; the Camden liabilities are order-of-magnitude estimates; the H5N1 datum is a US protein-fragility signal.
