Systems atlas // pathways not predictions
The Cascade Atlas
Twenty cascading-risk pathways that need to be mitigated in a systemic sense — each read as a trigger that rearranges many systems at once, until the parts that would normally interrupt the harm fail together.
topology · component · test
How to read the atlas
Real cascades are sentences built from eight structural moves. Naming the move tells you which early-warning signal to watch; naming the optionality component it attacks tells you what a mitigation must restore.
// the six components a cascade can attack — reachability · reversibility · response diversity · slack (buffers) · lead time · decision latitude. Six operating laws: foreclosure precedes harm; hysteresis is the master switch; optionality lives in diversity and chokepoints; loops convert events into regimes; collapse is multiplicative; the recursive regime is an absorbing state.
A platform earns its place only if it raises the optionality stock across more than one component — and keeps the system reversible.
A hard seawall fails the test: it buys safety now, clicks an irreversibility ratchet, and deepens dependency. Managed-retreat finance plus spatial intelligence passes. The test is what filters out negative pass-throughs — fossil-powered cooling, militarised borders, surveillance-heavy crisis management — that stabilise one component while ratcheting another.

Provisioning cascades

capital & time
Economic & financial cascades
Finance is over-hedged for price and under-hedged for continuity. Here the cascade is a loop: a defensive move that is locally rational and systemically corrosive.

T4 loopT8 ratchetreturns to capital outpace returns to people→incentive to invest in human capability weakens→human-centred adaptation underpriced (returns accrue to people, not markets)→resilience & care appear "non-investable" → capital drifts to asset-protection→the transition becomes capital-preservation, not human-preservation
bodies, rights, legitimacy
Social & political cascades
Where the physical becomes political. The corpus states these conditionally: material stress does not cause the outcome — it is filtered through who is protected, and whether trust holds.
-
D15
Capability degradation feedback
T4 feedbackEarth-system stress becomes internal load (heat, air pollution, undernutrition, disease, trauma)→acute → chronic → psycho-social load erodes immunity, development, attention, trust→the population has less adaptive slack→shock-to-harm conversion rate rises→agency forecloses — the responder is damaged, not just the systems -
D16

T5 bridgeT8 ratchetbifurcationcompound biophysical stress forces mobility→the vulnerability substrate decides who is protected and who is abandoned→survival pressure distributed unfairly → legitimacy failure (the pivot)→political fork: coercive vs. inclusive/adaptive→rights foreclosed; fragmentation or authoritarian consolidation -
D17
Provision collapse → social-contract failure
T4 loopT5 bridgea fragile material floor — welfare that compensates lost income, not the means of life→a shock hits essential systems (food, water, energy, shelter, care)→income compensation too slow & fragile to hold the floor→people left dependent; provision fails→stabilisation capacity lost → authoritarian capture opens -
D18 · the pivot
Legitimacy foreclosure & adaptive-execution risk
T4 loopT8 ratchettrust falls below threshold, or the decisioning stack can't keep pace with compounding shocks→cooperative problem-solving stops→sense → coordinate → commit → revise fails to keep pace ("adaptive execution risk")→preventive investment blocked; reactive spending dominates→decision latitude lost → Total Asset Value at Risk realised
mind & goals
Cognitive & existential cascades
The most conditional band, and the one the whole atlas tends toward: cascades in the layer that decides what a civilisation can even perceive and choose — where a mistaken goal can become infrastructure before it can be judged.
-
E19 · stage 0
Information-disorder → cognitive-security collapse
T4 loopT5 bridgeT8 ratchetmedia power shifts to extractive attention infrastructure (ranking, synthetic & agentic systems)→synthetic content becomes cheap; navigating information becomes the scarce resource→deliberation grows dependent on hostile attention architectures ("epistemic dependency")→shared comprehensibility degrades → coordination falls→cognitive security lost — a polity can no longer govern from within
twenty at once
What the atlas shows
Laid side by side, the twenty are not twenty separate problems. Three patterns fall out.
- They converge on a few hinges. Legitimacy and decision latitude (D18) and capability and agency (D15) are where the physical becomes political, and where almost every pathway either locks or reopens. Fund the hinges and you interrupt many pathways at once.
- The mitigations are a small set reused. Across all twenty, the interruptions collapse into roughly eight tier-one stabiliser platforms plus the continuity-finance / security-economy machinery and the decisioning layer. A "cascade pathway to mitigate" and a "civilization option to fund" are the same object seen from opposite ends.
- Every pathway ends in a ratchet or a loop. That is why the recurring instruction is act early: once a T8 ratchet or a T4 loop closes, reversal cost jumps and the regime becomes an absorbing state. The atlas is an argument for pre-emption priced as risk reduction, not relief priced after the fact.
Evidence anchors
This atlas is a systems synthesis drawn from Dark Matter Labs' Civilization Options / XCO corpus. The figures below anchor the front-of-chain claims, where the evidence is strongest; the political, cognitive and existential pathways are stated conditionally by design.
>60% of emerging infectious diseases come from animals; 58% of known human infectious diseases have been aggravated by climate hazards across 1,006 documented pathways (WHO; Nature Climate Change).
Maize multi-breadbasket failure risk rises from ~6% to ~40% at 1.5°C; ~266m people in 47 food-crisis countries faced high acute food insecurity in 2025.
Over 123 million forcibly displaced at end-2024 (UNHCR); up to ~216 million internal climate migrants projected by 2050 (World Bank Groundswell).
The US uninsured-homeowner share roughly doubled (~5% → ~12%) in a decade; unmaintained infrastructure degrades non-linearly.
Developing countries paid a record ~US$1.4 trillion on foreign debt in 2023, constraining resilience investment (World Bank); 61 state-based conflicts in 2024, the highest since 1946 (UCDP).
What this is, and what it is not
- Confidence gradient. Front-of-chain physical claims (Bands A–B) are well-evidenced; political, cognitive and existential pathways (Bands D–E) are stated conditionally, mirroring the source argumentation. The atlas is best read as medium-confidence overall for that reason.
- The card format is synthesis. The individual pathways are all sourced from the corpus; casting them into one comparable trigger→terminal→topology shape, the five-band grouping and the three step-back patterns are an integration — grounded in the named documents, not asserted by a single one.
- A real inconsistency, flagged not hidden. The corpus cites both "six of nine" and "seven of nine" planetary boundaries breached. Pathway A2 states the range honestly rather than picking one.
- The measurement gap is inherited. There is no agreed metric anywhere in the corpus for how much optionality a given cascade destroys; the priority ordering is by topology (closeness to a ratchet or closing loop), which is defensible but qualitative.
- Twenty is a curation, not a census. Several genuine cascades were merged or held back to keep the set distinct — two Madrid readings, several insurance chains, and the claims-economy and recursion-without-metacognition pathways folded into E20. A supply-chain-chokepoint pathway (e.g. the Strait of Hormuz) is a candidate for a future pass.
A maintained reading synthesised from the Dark Matter Labs Civilization Options / XCO corpus (the Optionality Collapse Atlas, the climate-to-pandemic diagram, the Pass-Through Optionality Stabilizers model, the biophysical-to-cascading-violence argumentation, and the place / sector papers). Interpretation, not a primary source. Built on the xCO design system. ← Back to the index
