The mechanism, carefully

The Logic of Cascading Risk

How does Earth-system breakdown become a civilizational risk? Not directly — and not inevitably. Across four Dark Matter Labs diagrams runs one careful argument: biophysical stress becomes a security risk only when it is transmitted through the networks we depend on, filtered through how unequally a society is exposed, and converted into politics at the point where hardship is felt as injustice. This is that argument, laid out stage by stage, with the evidence and its honest gradient.

A reading of four Dm cascade diagrams — the v1 flowchart, the argumentation paper and its stage diagram, the Systems Map v2.0, and The Entanglement Cascade · grounded in WMO, IPCC, IPBES, UNHCR, IDMC, UCDP, SIPRI, IMF and World Bank data · reading v1, jul 2026

The claim in one line

Biophysical breakdown is the accelerant; inequality and state-legitimacy failure are the ignition; coercion politics shapes whether the end-state is collapse or war.

This is the sharpest statement in the whole model, printed along the bottom of the Systems Map v2.0. It does real work: it separates the three causal roles the earlier diagram blurred. The biophysical layer alone never lights the fire — it loads the system. What lights it is unfairly-distributed hardship. And what decides the shape of the burn is politics. The corpus is emphatic that this chain is conditional, not deterministic: each stage raises the probability of the next; none guarantees it.

01 / the claim

Climate is a risk multiplier, not a cause of war.

The load-bearing move is to refuse the shortcut from "drought" to "conflict". The same hazard produces wildly different outcomes in different places — because what converts stress into breakdown is the social and political ground it lands on. That is why the diagrams spend most of their space on the human half of the chain, not the physical trigger.

A shock in one system does not stay contained. Because our systems are tightly coupled — food, water, energy, finance, insurance, logistics, information, care — a failure in one is transmitted into the others. Tight coupling is efficient in calm periods and a transmission channel under stress; that duality is the whole reason ordinary insurance and diversification cannot handle this class of risk. If risk merely impaired discrete assets one at a time, we would already have the tools. Because it couples and compounds, we do not.

The diagrams are honest about where the evidence is strong and where it is not. Confidence is highest at the front of the chain — the physical climate, ecosystem damage, food and water stress, displacement — and weakens by design toward the back, because violence and authoritarianism emerge from interactions between material stress, identity, political opportunity and organised actors. Treat the front as measurement and the back as conditional reasoning. That gradient is a strength of the model, not a flaw: it refuses to over-claim the one link it cannot prove.

02 / the spine

The chain, stage by stage — ending in a regime, not an event.

The reconciled eight-stage spine, with the severity rating each stage carries in The Entanglement Cascade. Note where severity peaks: not at the political end alone, but at human capability degradation — the stage where the crisis damages the responder, not just the systems the responder depends on.

1

Biophysical tipping risk High

The shift from linear change to threshold dynamics and compound, self-amplifying feedback — ice sheets, AMOC, forests and carbon, permafrost, ocean and ecosystem stress. Once crossed, these do not readily flip back.

2

Shocks through critical dependency networks High

Stress propagates through food, water, energy, finance, insurance, logistics, information, care and migration systems — the coupled buffers that fail together under a common shock.

3

Survival pressure in vulnerable societies High

Scarcity and price pressure, livelihood loss, service strain and displacement — the material squeeze on daily life. How hard it bites is set by the pre-existing substrate: inequality, precarity, fiscal fragility, weak institutions, low social capital.

4

Human capability degradation Extreme

Heat, air pollution, undernutrition, disease and trauma erode the body and mind directly — cognition, immunity, mental health, longevity. This is a feedback, not merely an impact: it weakens the very population every later stage relies on to interrupt the cascade. Rated the most severe mid-chain stage for exactly that reason.

5

Legitimacy failure High

When survival pressure is distributed unfairly, hardship becomes injustice and crisis becomes politically combustible. The state is seen not merely as failing, but as protecting some lives and sacrificing others. Below a threshold of trust, cooperative problem-solving stops. This is where a physical crisis becomes a political one.

6

Political conversion High

Elites and movements convert legitimacy failure into power — through populist mobilisation, identity nationalism, disinformation, emergency-powers normalisation and scapegoating. The diagrams are blunt: this uses fear, identity and control, "not solutions".

7

The political fork Catastrophic

Coercive · foreclosing
Fragmentation (state failure, militia and warlordism, secession) or authoritarian consolidation (surveillance, censorship, crackdown). Tends to ratchet — it outlives the emergency that justified it.
Inclusive · reopening
Power-sharing, justice and reform, social protection, resilient institutions, cooperation. Keeps the fork open. This is the off-ramp — and, tellingly, the one three of the four diagrams omit.
8

Cascading collapse & planetary cascades Catastrophic

Displacement spillovers, proxy conflict, resource militarisation, weaponised interdependence, cooperation failure, economic fragmentation — the shock crossing borders and scales, up to systemic multi-domain collapse.

→

Recursive planetary risk

Not a single collapse but a regime: reduced adaptive capacity and greater exposure to the next shock, locking societies into deeper cycles. The feedback loops that entrench fragility are the ones that degrade the very capacities — governance, cooperation, ecological stewardship — needed to manage the original driver.

03 / the hinges

Two stages decide almost everything.

If you want the key insight rather than the full chain, it is this: the cascade converges on two hinges, and nearly every pathway either locks or reopens at one of them. Defend these two and you interrupt many pathways at once.

Hinge one · stage 5

Legitimacy — where the physical becomes political.

It is not the amount of hardship that tips a society; it is hardship experienced as unfairly distributed. Below a trust threshold, the machinery of cooperative problem-solving stops working — and the right adaptation can exist and still be impossible to execute. This is the component whose loss changes how every subsequent future gets chosen: by deliberation, or by coercion.

Hinge two · stage 4

Capability — where the crisis damages the responder.

Every other stage tacitly assumes a population able to sense, decide, coordinate and act. Capability degradation attacks that assumption at the root. By the time the cascade is advanced, the people who would have to reverse it are themselves heat-sick, malnourished, exhausted and traumatised — which is precisely why late response is so much harder than early prevention.

Why this matters for where you actThe human half of the cascade is as non-linear as the physical half. Alongside biophysical tipping points sit negative social tipping thresholds — trust collapse, cohesion breakdown, crushed nonviolent resistance — points past which a society flips into a worse state and does not simply flip back when the material stress eases. Naming them tells you what early-warning signals to watch: sustained protest escalation, normalised political violence, security-force politicisation, large-scale emigration.
04 / the grammar

Why it cascades rather than stays contained.

Underneath the stages sits a structural grammar. Real cascades are "sentences" built from a small set of moves — and the same few moves explain why a shock becomes a regime.

The canonical run is threshold → fan-out → fan-in → bridge → loop → ratchet. A tipping jump (threshold) radiates demands across many systems at once (fan-out); those demands converge on shared chokepoints (fan-in); failure at a chokepoint bridges from ecology into finance and then politics (cross-domain bridge); reinforcing feedback locks it in (loop); and an irreversibility ratchet makes it permanent. The Systems Map v2.0 names six of these loops explicitly as "Dynamic Amplifiers": inequality & disadvantage, resource-stress, displacement–border, information–polarisation, war–militarisation, and dependency–weaponisation.

The practical consequence is the one The Entanglement Cascade puts as its takeaway: this is a system, not a sequence — and therefore breaking any link early reduces systemic collapse risk. You do not have to stop the whole chain; you have to keep loops from closing and ratchets from clicking, because after they do, the cost of reversal rises faster than the damage.

05 / the laws

Six regularities that hold across the whole chain.

Read the cascade down its length and the same structural truths recur. These are the operating laws the model designs against — each a direct instruction for where and when to act.

L1

Foreclosure precedes harm.

Options are lost while the present still looks normal. The aquifer's last viable cropping future closes years before the well runs dry; a democracy's adaptive path closes the moment trust falls below the threshold for cooperation — not when the violence starts.

Instruction: instrument the leading indicators; never wait for the lagging damage.

L2

Hysteresis is the master switch.

It is the whole difference between a stressor (recoverable) and a collapse (not). Ice, aquifers, ocean chemistry, soil, sunk capital and autocratisation are all dominated by it.

Instruction: keep the system on the reversible side of each threshold for as long as possible.

L3

Optionality lives in diversity and in chokepoints.

The largest losses come through synchronisation — the correlated failure of buffers assumed independent — and at convergence nodes where one keystone cancels many futures at once.

Instruction: protect chokepoints with slack; defend diversity by de-correlating.

L4

Loops convert events into regimes.

A shock is survivable; a reinforcing loop is a new normal. The insurance–fiscal, debt and legitimacy pathways are all loops — which is why they define the recursive stage.

Instruction: interrupt before loop-dominance; once a loop closes, reversal cost outruns the damage.

L5

Collapse is multiplicative across components.

Real pathways foreclose several things at once — reachability and reversibility and decision latitude. Partial defence of one fails if the others go.

Instruction: a good intervention adds to more than one component at once, and keeps the system reversible.

L6

The recursive regime is an absorbing state.

Once spend-down chronically exceeds rebuild and loops dominate, interventions stop "taking" — the system no longer responds to inputs that worked earlier.

Instruction: the entire value of early action is to keep the system out of this state, where leverage still exists.

06 / the evidence

What is measured, and how sure we are.

The Systems Map v2.0's real advance is to attach a confidence and a severity to each biophysical trigger, rather than asserting them at equal weight. Note the honest entry: AMOC is high-severity but only medium-confidence — the most consequential ocean-circulation tipping element is also the least certain.

07 / the four diagrams

Four renderings of one model — and one caveat that matters.

The same argument has been drawn four times, each adding an apparatus the last lacked. Read together they are stronger than any one — but there is a discrepancy worth naming before you circulate any of them.

  1. v1 · flowchart

    The eight-stage flowchart

The cleanest simple statement of the spine: physical trigger → dependency networks → vulnerability → survival pressure → capability → legitimacy → political fork → planetary cascades → recursive risk.

  2. the paper · stage diagram

    The argumentation paper's own diagram

The heavily-cited version, and the only one that draws an inclusive / adaptive branch at the fork. Its whole "urgency without fatalism" message rests on that off-ramp being reachable.

  3. v2.0 · systems map

    Systems Map v2.0 — Earth–Society–State

The evidence-graded rebuild: structural vulnerability moved to the front as the precondition, a per-cluster confidence/severity table, an explicit negative-social-tipping-thresholds stage with observable indicators, and six named reinforcing loops.

  4. the entanglement cascade

    The Entanglement Cascade

The most elaborate: per-stage severity ratings (peaking at Extreme for capability degradation, Catastrophic for the political outcomes), 2020s–2040s+ impact-outlook curves, a long-tail existential-risk end-state, and the framing that this is a system, not a sequence.

The caveat to carryThree of the four diagrams — the v1 flowchart, the Systems Map v2.0 and The Entanglement Cascade — fork only into two bad outcomes, fragmentation or authoritarian consolidation, with no adaptive branch. Only the argumentation paper's own stage diagram keeps the inclusive off-ramp the argument depends on. So the model's most hopeful claim — that the same structure run backwards buys the future back — is precisely the one its most-circulated pictures omit. Use the diagrams knowing they read more fatalistically than the paper behind them intends.
08 / the reading

Read forward it is a risk map. Read backward it is an investment map.

The point of tracing the mechanism this carefully is not diagnosis for its own sake. Because every pathway ends in a loop or a ratchet, reversal cost rises faster than damage once they close — which turns the whole model into an argument for pre-emption priced as risk reduction.

Each stage that spends optionality down can, in principle, be run in reverse to deposit it back: build response diversity where synchronisation threatens; restore reversibility instead of sinking capital into monuments; buffer the chokepoints; trigger positive rather than negative loops; manufacture lead time through early warning; and defend decision latitude by treating legitimacy as infrastructure. The single test for any intervention is whether it raises the option-space across more than one of these at once and keeps the system reversible. A hard seawall fails it — it buys safety now and clicks an irreversibility ratchet. Managed-retreat finance plus shared spatial intelligence passes.

That is why the corpus insists prevention beats late response — the empirical spine of the UN–World Bank Pathways for Peace finding, restated as a property of coupled systems. The cascade is not a catalogue of doom. Read as the loss of optionality, it is a target list: the places where acting early, while leverage still exists, buys back the most future.

09 / grounding

Sources for the chain and the figures.

Physical-risk and system-structure claims carry high confidence; conflict, legitimacy and violence pathways are stated conditionally, mirroring the source documents. Figures are order-of-magnitude, for orientation.
