Preserving the room to manoeuvre.

A map of Dark Matter Labs' Civilization Options / Optionality corpus — 58 documents, ~2024–2026 — and how one argument runs through all of it.

The foundational conditions of modern civilization are degrading at the same time — and because our systems are tightly coupled, shocks now cascade across them.

They run from Earth-system tipping points, through food, water, energy and finance networks, into human capability, and then into politics — where crisis becomes authoritarianism or fragmentation. The distinctive Dark Matter Labs claim is that the deepest risk is the compression of optionality: the narrowing of our collective room to manoeuvre.

The central task of the decade is to preserve and expand civilizational optionality — the range of viable futures still open to a planetary civilization. Framed as enlightened self-interest, not morality.

The corpus stacks into four layers, from diagnosis to delivery.

1 · Diagnosis

Why now

Cascading risk and its crisis-acceleration spiral, biophysical tipping risk, planetary boundaries, and the standing regime of degenerative volatility.

2 · The organising idea

Optionality

Optionality and civilizational optionality; optionality cascades (how one intervention widens the option space); and the option fields map of ~16 domains to act in.

3 · Worldview & economics

A life-ennobling economy

The life-ennobling economy and its 13 meta-axioms; the multi-capital model; system and team entrepreneurship; societal decisioning as an asset class; distributed universal provision; and native organising.

4 · The machinery

How to build & fund it

Exstitutions built by a formation studio; funded through a missioning capital stack and continuity finance; priced via a repurposed value at risk; grounded in bioregional financing; defended by civic power.

Civilization Options Fund

Most 2025–2026 documents orbit the Civilization Options Fund (COF) — a "formation studio plus pooled capital vehicle" that builds exstitutions against option fields, targeting a first raise of ~£25m and £100m+ thereafter.

Live and worked sites include Madrid (cooling — home of its first seeded institution), Copenhagen (zero-extraction development), Dartmoor (a natural reservoir), the Alps, and the oceans. Its cultural precursor is the Medici Fund.

Recurring tensions

Finance vs anti-financialisation

The philosophy warns against "financialising life"; the operational papers securitise continuity and optionality.

Centralisation vs distribution

A central fund/engine sits awkwardly beside a strong anti-centralisation ethic.

Two headline framings

"Optionality" (Long Now, COF) vs "life-ennobling economics" (the Deep Plan) — the same worldview, different top-level words.

An unmeasurable core

Dm's own draft admits there is no agreed metric for optionality — yet later pieces assert "optionality delta" metrics.
